Ditzum – pearl of the Rheiderland
What you can discover right on our doorstep
Idyllic spot on the Dollart
Between cutters, fish and dike
When you step outside our door, you're already in the heart of Ditzum. Just around the corner is the fishing harbor, where the cutters moor. Watch the fishermen at work or take the opportunity to go out to sea yourself. You can also set sail for Borkum on the catamaran "Nordlicht" or take the ferry to Petkum on the other side of the Ems River.

Experience, enjoy, explore

The fishing port
The central hub is the fishing harbor in Ditzum. Here you can watch the fishermen bringing their catch home.
Alongside the cutters, elegant wooden boats are often moored here. These are usually awaiting a facelift from the Bültjer shipyard. The shipyard is one of the last remaining wooden boatyards in the country.

The mill of Ditzum
The windmill in our village is hard to miss. This impressive gallery windmill was originally built in 1883, but has since burned down twice and been rebuilt. In summer, its sails turn, and guided tours are offered by the Ditzum Mill Association.

Ems Barrier
Anyone looking for a pleasant destination for a long walk should follow the Ems River for about two kilometers downstream. The Ems Barrier can be seen from afar. It serves both as protection against storm surges and as a kind of damming gate during the transfer of cruise ships from the Meyer shipyard.

Why Ditzum is particularly worthwhile for cycling tourists
The flat landscape has its advantages. Not only can we East Frisians see who's coming for dinner in the morning, but cycling is also very convenient. From Ditzum, you can quickly reach the Dollart, Leer, and even the Netherlands. Those wanting to cycle the North Sea Cycle Route, the Ems Cycle Route, or the International Dollard Route can do so with rental bikes available locally.

Borkum and other islands
Every Sunday, the catamaran "Nordlicht" departs from Ditzum for Borkum. Whether you're looking for a stroll on the beach, sunbathing, or exploring the island, a visit is well worth it. The other ports, from which ferries depart for Spiekeroog, Juist, and other islands, are also easily accessible.

The symbiosis of bicycle and canoe
East Frisia offers plenty of water not only along the North Sea and the Ems River, but also in its numerous canals and lakes. These can easily be incorporated into a cycling tour. Thanks to the Paddle & Pedal stations, switching from bicycle to canoe and back again is no problem.
